Summary
Born deaf in London; entered the Institution for the Deaf and Dumb at Margate. After schooling, went to work for a jeweler's shop for 7 years. Not finding enough scope for his energy there, in 1889 he began study for a missionaryship for the deaf, switching employment to a marine engineering company for his livelihood. Also became involved in the temperance movement, and in 1884, 1895, and 1902, was appointed to increasingly responsible missionary positions. Served as a delegate to several international conferences of the deaf.
