Summary
Born in Missouri; deafened at age 9 from spinal meningitis. Attempted to continue in regular school for a year until transferring to the Arkansas School for the Deaf in 1932, finishing there at age 16 and entering Gallaudet College, where she graduated in 1940. Worked in a wartime production factory, then became a teacher at Gallaudet in 1944. Founder of the tutorial center at Gallaudet College; president of the Senior Citizens Section of the National Association of the Deaf, 1982; volunteer worker at NAD headquarters since her retirement, then after the death of her deaf husband (Leon Auerbach, q.v.) moved to Concord, NH to be nearer her children and grandchildren.
