Summary
Born deaf near Guilford, CT; one of the earliest students (1817-1821) at what is now the American School for the Deaf, Hartford, CT. Married the school founder, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet (q.v.) and bore him eight children, including Thomas Gallaudet (q.v.) and Edward Miner Gallaudet (q.v.). In her widowhood, she became matron, 1857-1866, of the Columbia Institution for the Deaf, founded by her son Edward Miner Gallaudet; retired to summer home in New York and winter home in Washington.
