McChord, Winfield (Wilmott Winfield)

Hearing. Graduated Transylvania College, KY in 1962; master's from Gallaudet College and additional postgraduate studies at University of Cincinnati and University of Virginia. Taught (1963-1966) and was principal (1967-1969) at Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind; in between he was principal of the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind 1966-1967. Principal of the Kentucky School for the Deaf 1969-1971, then superintendent 1971-1981. Became headmaster of the American School for the Deaf 1981-2001. Served as interim president of St. Mary's School for the Deaf 2001-2003, then went to Georgia School for the Deaf as Director from 2003 until his death. He is said to have been the first licensed interpreter for the deaf in America (1973) and interpreted for one U.S. vice-president (Al Gore) and two U.S. presidents (John Kennedy and Bill Clinton). President or committee member of several deaf education organizations, and visiting professor at Huajhong Normal University in Wuhan China 1990.
