Lewis, Norman Vickers

Born at Toronto; deafened by scarlet fever at age 4. Sent to J.B. McGann's school for the deaf at Toronto and followed the school when it relocated to Hamilton. After 4 years of schooling, apprenticed to learn printing at the Toronto Daily Globe. Moving to Detroit, worked in the office of the Journal of Commerce, becoming foreman of the job department. Returned to Toronto and independently published the Silent Nation for the deaf. Married Sarah Fitzakerly Guest in 1882. His wife's poor health prompted a move to southern California. After working at job printing for a while, set up his own shop again in 1898, publishing the History of the Los Angeles Association of the Deaf and periodicals called Philocophus and Church Messenger. After his first wife died in 1919, remarried in 1921 to Allie May Andrews.
