Summary
Born at Alpena, MI; deaf at age 11, dropping out of school and working 9 years on a farm. At age 20, went to Detroit in search of a cure for his hearing but failed. In 1915, entered the Michican School for the Deaf, graduating 1917. B.A. (1922) from Gallaudet College; master's (1924) from George Washington University; honorary master's from Gallaudet (1950). In 1927, began work at the National Bureau of Standards, where he developed rapid tests for sulphate and for silicon dioxide in cement; also worked on jet engine alloys; author of several scientific papers and articles.
