Although deaf since infancy, this was not recognized until his teens. While at a South Korean school for the deaf, met an art teacher who introduced him to Catholicism. Not allowed to study theology in Korea because of his deafness, he went to the U.S., first to Gallaudet University to earn two undergraduate degrees, then to St. John's University in New York City for theological studies, completing a master of divinity degree in ministerial studies. Planned to return to South Korea to be ordained there as the first deaf Korean Catholic priest.
