Summary
Born deaf at Norfolk and sent first to a private hearing school, but failure there led to his placement in the London Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb where he received a basic education. He then apprenticed to learn the profession of heraldic arts, later studying 1841-1851 at Herald's College in London. He had many customers for his paintings of coats of arms on coaches, carriages, and plaques, and soon opened his own heraldic art business, employing several deaf apprentices. He then extended his business by opening a shop for the sale of stationery and engravings. Married a hearing girl in 1846, then had a second marriage to deaf woman Hannah Carter in 1871.
