Became interested in becoming an airplane pilot. Although a native of Australia, he moved to the U.S. since Australia at that time did not allow deaf pilots to fly solo--they had to be accompanied by a hearing pilot. While in the U.S., he owned his own plane and was free to fly by himself. When Australia relaxed its regulations to allow deaf pilots to fly solo, he moved back to Australia in 2002, but had to sell his American plane and buy another one in Australia since insurance companies refused to insure flying his plane to Australia unless he had a hearing pilot with him, which was prohibitively expensive.
