Dewar, Raymond

Native of Vankleek Hill, ON; deaf at age 8 from meningitis. Graduated the Institution Catholique des Sourds-Muets in 1971, studied at the Polyvalente Roger-Lavigne, earned a diploma from CEGEP Bois-de-Boulogne and a B.Ed. from the Universite de Quebec. Taught at the Institution Catholique 1975-1980 and at the Polyvale Lucien Page 1980-1983; also active in the deaf rights movement and participated in local theater; co-authored Langue des Signes Quebecois-1 (1981), the first dictionary of Quebec Sign Language. Died accidentially from carbon monoxide poisoning. In 1984, a rehabilitation services center for the deaf and hard of hearing in Montreal was named the Institut Raymond-Dewar in his memory.
