Summary
Born deaf at Hendon, London (one source says Dover instead); home schooled by her mother, although she spent some time in a kindergarten for hearing children, where her artistic talent first manifested itself. Went to the Dover School of Art beginning at age 7, and eventually entered the Royal College of Art in London. After a few difficult initial years, succeeded in making a career out of commissions for sculptures.
