Grew up in hearing public schools, hiding her deafness as much as possible. Had aspirations to become a professional female basketball player, and attended basketball camp for 5 summers straight in Maine. Graduated Gallaudet University with an M.A.; worked for a Maryland YMCA as a director and then took another job in education in Maine.
