Covarrubias, Antonio de

Deaf friend of famed Greek-Spanish painter El Greco. Studied law at the University of Salamanca and became a noted jurist, antiquarian, philosopher, poet, humanist and Hellenist. He was ordained in 1581 and made a canon of Toledo Cathedral. He became very deaf in late life. El Greco painted him; this portrait is now in the Louvre.
