Summary
Born at Whiting, ME; deafened by scarlet fever at age 10. Went to public schools before becoming deaf, but afterwards did not go to school again until his mother took him to the American School at Hartford at age 18. Graduated in 1872, then entered Gallaudet College (B.A., 1877). Two years in a clerking job followed by teaching at the American School for at least 20 years. Wrote Bits of History (1890), a compilation of history stories that was widely used in U.S. schools for the deaf.
