              Born at Montreal, QC, but lived the first 11 years of her life in New York City. Deafened at age 4 from illness. Her family eventually moved back to Montreal and she graduated the Mackay Institute for the Deaf. She married Carl Mergler, also deaf, but soon lost him to death. She then worked for a time as a seamstress for a baby-clothing manufacturer, then became a live-in caretaker or companion to May Cunningham, a retired deaf teacher from the Mackay Institute. After Cunningham's death, Ellen did volunteer work. At some point she remarried to Andrew Mitchell, also deaf, but again outlived her husband.
