Summary
Born at West Point, IL; deaf at 4 1/2 from meningitis. Illinois School for the deaf 1877-1888, Gallaudet College 1888-1893 (B.A.). Wrote many articles for the deaf press during his school and college years and after; co-founder of Gallaudet's Buff and Blue student newspaper. Prepared for the journalism profession while in college, but hard times forced him into printing; he accepted a job in charge of the printing office at the Minnesota School for the deaf, 1894-1895, then took a similar position at the North Dakota School for the deaf from 1895 on. Married Elizabeth V. Wayman in 1901.
