Currier, Enoch Henry

Hearing. An accident to one of his eyes prevented his plan to enter the ministry, and he decided to go into deaf education instead. Invented the "duplex conico-cylindrical ear tube" that allowed groups of 4 or more hard of hearing students to be instructed at one time. Principal of the New York Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb, 1893 until his death. Was instrumental in persuading the NY legislature to fund education of all deaf NY children from age 5 up. Introduced military drills, uniforms, and bands to the New York Institution, as well as a kindergarten. Honorary degree from Gallaudet College, 1892.
