Summary
Born deaf to deaf parents at Loughborough, England; graduated Gallaudet College, 1956, and master's degree in 1966 from Eastern Michigan University. Became a teacher of mentally retarded deaf children and adults at Lapeer State Home and Training School, Lapeer, MI. Inspired by an article on Basic English, he created Seeing Essential English (SEE I) as an aid for deaf children to learn grammatical English. Joined the teaching staff at Brookhurst Jr. High School, Anaheim, CA, where a team of teachers and interpreters further developed SEE I. Some team members began to disagree with the SEE I system, and Dennis Wampler broke away to develop Linguistics of Visual English (LOVE). Another group of 3, led by Gerilee Gustason (q.v.), also broke in a different direction to create Signing Exact English (SEE II).
