Full name Victoria Alice Elizabeth Julia Maria. Born deaf at Windsor Castle; married Prince Andrew of Greece (and so sometimes known as Princess Andrew); mother of Prince Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh and later husband of Queen Elizabeth II. When Turkey defeated Greece in a 1922 war, Andrew and Alice had to flee to Paris, where she opened a jewelry and embroidery store to make a living. They returned to Greece at the outbreak of World War II, and she worked for the Red Cross during the war. Postwar, she entered a Greek nunnery; died at Buckingham Palace in London and eventually buried in Israel. Book-length biography is Alice: Princess Andrew of Greece (2000).
