              Summary
              Deafened at 2 from colds, but retained partial hearing in one ear. Attended the Illinois Institution for the Deaf and Dumb without graduating. Went to work as a shoemaker for a while, then in 1890 was appointed foreman of the harness and shoe shops at the Kansas School for the Deaf.
