Summary
Born on a farm near York, PA; deaf from scarlet fever at about age 8. Worked as a carriage and ornamental painter, then entered the Ohio School for the deaf at age 20, remaining 4 years. Taught there 1864, then to the Iowa School for the deaf in 1865 until retirement in 1901 due to declining health. Married Susanna McClure, a fellow teacher, in 1865.
