              Summary
              Born at Southwark; deaf at age 2 from measles. She also had only one good eye, though it is not clear whether that was a result of the measles or some other cause. Entered the Cavendish Road School for the deaf in 1899, then transferred to the Oak Lodge school for the deaf in 1905. Showed aptitude for needlework despite her vision limitation; upon leaving school in 1908, entered a dressmaking establishment, but soon left to specialize in embroidery until her marriage in 1916.
