Born near West Bend, WI; deaf at 3 from scarlet fever. Public schools for 4 years, then transferred to the Wisconsin School for the Deaf. After leaving school, began at the bottom of the ladder in the laundry business, working his way up at least as far as shirt-polisher (ironing). Married Gertrude Rose in 1901.
