              Born at Sioux City, IA; deafened at age 3. Unsuccessful home schooling, then the Wisconsin School for the Deaf for two years before he quit. Tried farming for several years, then tried his luck on the Alaskan frontier, where he got construction jobs in the summers and trapped fur animals in the winters.
