Carmichael, John

Born in Edinburgh and enrolled in the Edinburgh Institute for the Deaf and Dumb at age 9 in 1812. After leaving school, apprenticed to an engraver, eventually becoming a journeyman. Voluntarily emigrated to New South Wales in Australia in 1825 to try his fortune at the engraving business there; won several engraving commissions and also did some watercolor paintings. Became one of Australia's most prominent engravers, doing scenes of Sydney and the surrounding area, some of the first detailed maps of Australia, and some of the colony's first postage stamps. Married in 1837 but in 1851 lost his wife to childbirth. Died at Sydney, just one week after being declared bankrupt.
