              Summary
              Deafened at age 6; pupil at the Minnesota School for the deaf (under the name of Mark H. Howlett) and later in the Iowa School for the deaf (its first black student). In the 1890s, was editor of the Chicago Sunday Hero, the Afro-American World (Minneapolis), The Blade (Atchison, KS), The Protest (TX), Gazette (Oskaloosa, KS) and a press bureau in Chicago.
