Summary
First born-deaf British graduate of a British university (1910). Born deaf at Liverpool; brothers James Wilson Mackenzie and Charles Douglas Mackenzie were also born deaf. Irregularly attended the Liverpool School for the Deaf, then a junior school, plus some home tutoring by his mother, he eventually entered at age 13 and graduated a high school where he was the only deaf pupil. Studied art at the Liverpool School of Art and embarked on an art career in oils, watercolors, and portrait drawings, exhibiting at several galleries and winning medals. Became missioner with the Oxford Diocesan Mission to the Deaf about 1900. Tried several times to enter Oxford University, but rejected as "impossible" because of his being deaf. In 1907, succeeded in entering Cambridge University, graduating with a B.A. in theology in 1910 and earning an M.A. the next year. Married deaf woman Emily L. Kett in 1907. Moved to South Wales 1921-1931 to continue his missionary work among the deaf there until retirement.
