Summary
Born deaf in New York City; one of the first 7 pupils in the American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb, but left after 1 year to transfer to the just-founded New York Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb in May 1818. Married Clinton Mitchell and, later, Nathan M. Totten. Had matron and teacher posts at the New York, North Carolina (Raleigh), and Illinois Schools for the deaf, then at the New York School again; died at Matewan, NJ.
