Summary
At age 10 during the 1890s, invented a "mute's telephone" having keys at both ends. Moving one lettered key moved the corresponding lettered key on the other end through strings, a primitive forerunner of the TTY. Serious interest was shown by his school, which wanted to build a larger and improved version to assess its value, but apparently nothing came of it.
