Rose, F. J. (Frederick John)

Born at Oxford, England; deaf at 4 1/2 from scarlet fever. Entered the Old Kent Road Deaf and Dumb Institution in London at age 9. Emigrated to Australia in 1852, working as a trained carpenter and cabinetmaker in what is now South Melbourne, Victoria. Participated in the Australian gold rush, then returned to Melbourne and established a school for the deaf there, Australia's first and now the Victorian School for the Deaf. Was forced out of control of the school and into retirement in 1882 by hearing oralists; shifted his attention to promoting churches and clubs for the deaf in Australia.
