              Summary
              Hearing. Born at Breslau, Germany; family emigrated to the United States in 1845. Attended various small-town schools around the Midwest, then went to Milwaukee, WI and worked at a variety of miscellaneous jobs before joining the Union army during the U.S. Civil War. Postwar, worked briefly as a salesman, then from 1866 as a teacher of German in public schools. In 1883, was hired as principal of the day school department of the Wisconsin Phonological Institute to Promote the Teaching of Speech to the Deaf, serving until forced to retire in 1895 due to declining health.
