Summary
Hearing. Vice president for academic affairs and a professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro prior to being selected as seventh President of Gallaudet University in 1988, despite pressure from the deaf community to appoint a deaf President instead. This triggered the week-long "Deaf President Now" protest movement which led to Zinser's resignation after only 5 days in office, and the appointment of I. King Jordan (q.v.) to replace her. She subsequently became president of a college in the Pacific Northwest.
