Cornforth, John Warcup

Deafened beginning age 14 from otosclerosis, near-totally deaf by age 22. Attended the University of Sydney (B.S.C., 1937 and M.S.C., 1938) and Oxford University (D.Phil. 1941). Worked at Oxford University during World War II, then in 1946 moved to Mill Hill Research Laboratories of the Medical Research Council. 1962, became director of of a laboratory within Shell Research Ltd.. 1965-1971, also associate professor at the University of Warwick. 1971-1974, visiting professor at University of Sussex, then joined its permanent faculty. Shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1975, for his study of the formation of cholesterol molecules. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
