Born deaf from maternal rubella in Regina, SK; attended Rochester School for the Deaf 1 year, then mainstreamed in Regina public schools, graduating Central Collegiate School in 1985. Entered preparatory program for the deaf at Red River Community College and in 1987 completed a commercial cooking program as a certified cook. Worked in several restaurants before landing a permanent position in food services at the University of Regina. In 1992, changed fields, studying for and becoming a certified health records technician. Unable to find work in that field, she became a clerk before changing fields again, earning a computer business applications diploma, finally settling down in 2000 as a medical accounts assessor for the Saskatchewan health department.
