Summary
Born at Shaftsbury, VT; deafened at age 9 "from severe exposure while skating". Briefly attended New England "district schools", then worked as a laborer in the employ of his father. Entered the American School for the deaf at age 14, but left at 16 to become a newspaper printer in Danville, IL, later beginning to write articles for that paper. Continued printing work in Aurora, IL, then heard of Gallaudet College and decided to enter, beginning in 1868. Graduated 1872, visited Europe, then began teaching Latin and mathematics at Gallaudet, continuing for 40 years. Draper Drive on the Gallaudet University campus is named for him.
