Born deaf at Kampala, Uganda. Family emigrated to Canada in 1972; she attended the Jericho Hill School for the Deaf 2 years, then graduated Queen Elizabeth Jr. and Sr. High School (Calgary, AB) in 1985. Graduated Mount Royal College in 1989; starting in 1999, she took management development courses to broaden her education and qualifications. Employed in a variety of part-time positions 1988 onward. Married deaf man Al-Nasir Kanji about 1989.
