Summary
Had Aran-Duchenne type of muscular dystrophy, and a childhood mastoid operation left him without an eardrum in one ear. Although advised to forget medical studies because of his hearing loss, he went on to earn his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1915, and was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
