Carroll, John

Born deaf and orphaned at age 12; lived with a succession of foster parents. Also had a deaf twin sister, Joanne Carroll, who sometimes had the same foster parents and sometimes not. Attended a deaf unit in a Limerick secondary school, then enrolled in a upholstery-training program. One evening, he attended a party at a private house, but tried to back out when he discovered it would cost him 30 Irish pounds. One man who insisted on being paid followed Carroll outside into the dark and kicked him about the body and head. He was then carried back into the house by others and dumped on a couch, clearly seriously injured. The assailant, another man, and an 18-year-old girl then loaded him into a car, ostensibly to drive him to a hospital. He was instead punched and beaten some more while they drove miles into the countryside. They then stopped, dragged him out of the car and beat him some more and left him for dead. He survived a few hours more but died from exposure on that winter night before being discovered by a farmer. Deirdre Rose (hearing), the girl, was arrested, tried and found guilty for her part in Carroll's death. As of early 2002, the two men involved had not yet been brought to trial.
