Attended Ohio State University (B.S.); Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, plus postdoctoral work at the University of Gottingen. Deafened while working at the U.S. Army arsenal at Edgewood, MD, from accidental exposure to poison gas. Taught at Ohio State, University of Pennsylvania, Cincinnati University, and the Agricultural and Mechanical College (ND); head of the Chemical Engineering Dept. at Iowa State College. A pioneer in the water-softening industry.
