              Born at Girard, IL and deafened from spotted fever at 7. Graduated the Illinois Institution for the Deaf and Dumb in 1877. Worked a short time as a printer, then appointed a teacher in the Chicago Day Schools for the Deaf 1879-1901. In 1901, became principal of the Evansville School for the Deaf. Managing editor of the Chicago National Exponent, 1894-1896. Married Jennie E. Gilchrist, another Illinois Institution graduate, in 1881. Published Representative Deaf Persons of the United States (two editions) and Best Lincoln Stories Tersely Told.
