Summary
Deafened at age 4 1/2 from scarlet fever; graduated the Pennsylvania School for the deaf (Philadelphia), 1863; one of Gallaudet College's first students (B.A., 1869); M.A. (1874) and honorary D.Sc. (1914) from Gallaudet College. Teacher, then principal at the Pennsylvania School, 1875-1880; after various other jobs, associated with the Western University of Pennsylvania as a teacher and researcher; died at Pittsburgh. With A. Woodside, helped found the Western Pennsylvania School for the deaf.
