Summary
Son of the mayor of Northampton; deafened at age 5. 20 years later, was taught to speak, read and write by John Wallis (q.v.). In May 1662, Whaley was "exhibited" to the Royal Society, and again in December 1662 to King Charles I, as an "amazing feat". Surname sometimes spelled as Whaley. Despite ths, his education was insufficient to allow him to support himself in a job, and he was supported by his family until his death at Cogenhoe, Northampton. He never married.
