              Born at San Francisco; deafened at age 13 by an automobile accident that also blinded him in one eye; went to public school, then graduated the California School for the Deaf (Berkeley) in 1922; B.A. (1927) and M.A. (1932) from Gallaudet College; teacher, then dean of men at Gallaudet, 1927-1962. A dormitory building at Gallaudet University is named in his honor.
